Navratri (Meaning, Significance and its Types) :

Meaning : “Navratri”, meaning “nine nights“. In Sanskrit, nava meaning “nine” and ratri meaning “night”

Significance : Navratri is an annual Hindu festival where people keep fast and celebrate these nine days in the honor of the Goddess Durga, an aspect of Adi Parashakti, the supreme goddess who defeated and emerged victorious over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to help restore dharma.

Types Of Navratri : There are four seasonal Navaratris. The first occurs in the month of Chaitra (March/April) known as Chaitra Navratri and the second in Ashvin (September–October), known as Ashwin or Sharadeey Navaratri. These are Prakat Navaratris, where the Nav Durga are worshipped by the general public. In addition, there are two Gupta Navaratris (Secret Navaratris) for those practicing special austerities, during which the Ten Mahavidyas are worshipped—one beginning on the Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Magha Known as Magha Gupt Navratri and the other on the Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Ashadha known as Ashada Gupt Navratri.

Chaitra Navratri starting from 30th March (Sunday), till 7th April (Monday) will also mark the beginning of the new Samvatsar or Hindu New Year.

How to do Puja in Chaitra Navratri :

1. Get up early in the morning before the sun rises. Take a bath and wear new clothes. Do Ghat Sthapna/Kalash Sthapana in the muhurat mentioned above by yourself(if you know the vidhi) or by a Pandit Ji.

2. Then sit on a red kusha asan and do Achman, Pranayam and Swathivachan. After that offer red Chandan with Akshat, red Flowers,(Guggal or Chandan) Dhoop, (Ghee) Diya and Prasadam (of Kheer or Halva Puri) in front of the idol or photo of Goddess Durga.

3. Then read Durga Chalisa or read one of the following mantras 108 times :

   जयंती मंगला काली भद्रकाली कपालिनी दुर्गा क्षमा शिवा धात्री स्वाहा स्वधा नमोऽस्तुते
   Nav Durga Names :
   प्रथमं शैलपुत्रीति द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी ।
   तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम् ॥
   पंचमं स्कंदमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनी तथा ।
   सप्तमं कालरात्रिश्च महागौरीति चाष्टमम् ॥
   नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः ।
   Mantra for Money, Prosperity and Removal of Obstacles :
   सर्वा बाधा विनिर्मुक्तो धन-धान्य सुतान्वितः। मनुष्यो मत्प्रसादेन, भविष्यति न शंसयः
   Mantra for Removal of all kinds of problems :
   शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे।
   सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥

   सर्व मंगल मांगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके | शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरी नारायणी नमोस्तुते || 

4. Do samarpan of your jap by saying :  श्रीदुर्गाअर्पणमस्तु| 

5. Do aarti of Goddess Durga. Repeat this process everyday for nine days.
